Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research

Centre Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research (CRH) is a common workplace of the Faculty of Science, Palacký University Olomouc and local workplaces of the Institute of Experimental Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Crop Research Institute.

CRH employs over 130 researchers, about one-fifth of which are foreigners. The attention is focused on protein biotechnology, bio-energetics, chemical biology, plant biotechnology, plant cell biology, genetics and genomics of plants, plant genetic resources and metabolomics. Among other things the researchers read genetic information of plants and contribute to breeding of new varieties of crops important for nutrition of the mankind. They also focus on studying metabolism of plant hormone cytokinin and various biotechnological applications. CRH disposes of state-of-the-art equipment, a lot of which is rare to be seen elsewhere in the country.

Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials

Main focus of research at the scientific center lies in nanoparticles and nanotechnology. Experts are engaged mainly in the development of nanomaterials and chemicals that may find applications in medicine, biotechnology, food processing and other industries and environmental protection. The RCPTM is involved in major international collaborations in the field of particle physics, such as the Pierre Auger Observatory equipped with so-called ultralight mirrors developed in RCPTM or CERN ATLAS project.

There are around one hundred scientists operating in RCPTM, a quarter of which are foreigners. They are dealing with chemical, optical and material research. RCPTM belongs to the most efficient research institutions in this country, their research results every year translate to roughly 200 original scientific papers in prestigious journals. The center received a prestigious grant from the European Research Council (ERC). RCPTM annually organizes the unique Rudolf Zahradnik Lecture Series, where world-renowned scientists in the field of chemistry and material sciences present their findings.
