Mössbauer Spectrometers for Different Experimental Requirements

OLTWINS is a modular family of Mössbauer spectrometers. The product range includes multichannel systems for parallel measurements, laboratory instruments for routine work and compact setups for experiments with limited space.

The detector configuration, measurement geometry and acquisition electronics can be selected for a specific application.

Product Spectra Typical use
TenBeam Up to 10 High-throughput parallel measurements of up to ten samples using one radioactive source, with strong source shielding
SixBeam Up to 6 Parallel measurements of up to six samples in a smaller MultiBeam system, with strong source shielding
Standard 1 Routine single-beam laboratory measurements, with strong source shielding
Compact 1 The most affordable single-beam option, requiring customer-provided radiation shielding

OLTWINS Tenbeam

Up to Ten Spectra from One Radioactive Source

TenBeam is the largest multichannel system in the OLTWINS product range. It provides up to ten independent measurement positions using a single radioactive source.

The system is designed for laboratories that measure sample series or compare several materials under the same measurement conditions. Parallel acquisition reduces the time needed to complete these experiments and makes more efficient use of the available source activity.

Flexible Channel Configuration

Each measurement position can be configured separately. Available detection modes and combinations include:

  • transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy,
  • CEMS,
  • CXMS,
  • transmission with CEMS from the same sample,
  • transmission with CXMS from the same sample,
  • CEMS with CXMS.

Different measurement modes can be combined across the ten positions. One channel may be used for transmission while another records a combined surface and bulk measurement.

One OLTWINS e-unit operates two detectors. The required number of acquisition units therefore depends on the selected detector configuration.

Measurement Arrangement

The radioactive source remains fixed inside the radiation shielding. Doppler modulation is produced by moving the absorber together with the selected detector arrangement.

The system can operate in a horizontal or vertical configuration and can be modified using compatible OLTWINS equipment.

Basic Parameters

  • average linewidth: 0.235 mm/s for a 12 μm α-Fe absorber,
  • average linewidth: 0.27 mm/s for a 30 μm α-Fe absorber,
  • velocity range: up to ±25 mm/s,
  • operating frequency range: 5–60 Hz,
  • velocity profiles: triangular, sawtooth and constant.

The full velocity range is not available at every operating frequency.

OLTWINS Sixbeam

Six Measurement Positions from One Source

SixBeam uses one fixed radioactive source for up to six simultaneous sample measurements. It provides a smaller multichannel alternative to TenBeam while retaining the main advantages of the OLTWINS MultiBeam design.

The source is located inside strong radiation shielding. The transducer carries the absorber together with a scintillation detector, a CEMS detector or a selected detector combination.

Available Measurement Modes

SixBeam can be configured for:

  • transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy,
  • CEMS,
  • CXMS,
  • transmission with CEMS from the same sample,
  • transmission with CXMS from the same sample.

Selected configurations can record two types of Mössbauer spectrum from the same sample at the same time. The total number of acquired spectra depends on the installed detectors and electronic acquisition units.

OLTWINS Standard

A Highly Shielded Laboratory Spectrometer

OLTWINS Standard is designed for routine Mössbauer measurements in the laboratory. Its source is placed inside a highly shielded enclosure, and the spectrometer can be operated in a horizontal or vertical arrangement.

The system can be configured with detectors and acquisition electronics selected for the planned measurement method.

OLTWIN Standard can be adapted for measurements with cryostats, cryomagnetic systems and high-temperature furnaces.

OLTWINS Compact

A Cost-Effective Single-Channel Spectrometer

OLTWINS Compact is the most affordable single-beam, single-channel spectrometer in the product range. Unlike Standard, it does not include the same strong integrated source shielding and therefore requires radiation shielding to be provided as part of the customer's installation.

Compact retains the modular OLTWINS design and can be configured with detectors and acquisition electronics selected for the planned measurement method. Its small format is suitable for laboratories where installation space is limited and suitable radiation shielding is already available.

Custom and Special Arrangements

A Modular System Built Around the Experiment

OLTWINS spectrometers are modular. The transducer, detector, acquisition electronics, measurement geometry and sample environment can be selected or modified for a specific experiment.

Custom systems can be prepared for cryomagnetic measurements, high-temperature furnaces and other setups where a standard instrument cannot be used without mechanical or electronic changes.

Depending on the configuration, OLTWINS equipment can also support:

  • emission Mössbauer spectroscopy,
  • gamma-ray backscattering,
  • coincidence and anticoincidence measurements,
  • time-differential Mössbauer spectroscopy,
  • excited-state lifetime measurements with a suitable 122 keV detector.
