The UP Faculty of Science is readying the establishment of two new departments, focused on experimental biology and chemical biology. The proposal for the new departments was approved by the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science at their last meeting. The new departments are set to open next year.

“The new departments are mainly made up of existing employees of the Laboratory of Growth Regulators and the Department of Chemical Biology and Genetics of the Centre of the Region Haná, who prefer not to work at a university institute. It is the result of the successful development of the Laboratory of Growth Regulators in the last 20 years. Both new departments should have about 25–30 employees and are therefore strong enough to function as separate units, while the Laboratory of Growth Regulators will still have about 50 employees,” said Martin Kubala, Dean of the Faculty of Science.

The Academic Senate also approved the proposal to amend Annex 1 of the UP Faculty of Science UP Statute, thanks to which the Ethics Committee of the faculty will be included among its permanent advisory bodies. An amendment to the Statute of the faculty’s Ethics Committee was also approved.

The Academic Senate called on Dean Martin Kubala and UP Rector Jaroslav Miller to adhere to the basic premise of the Memorandum on the CATRIN university institute of 29 September 2020, signed by the deans of all eight university faculties, in the event of further negotiations on the establishment of a university institute. The Academic Senate also asked Dean Kubala to take steps to maintain the guarantees of study programmes/fields by the regular employees of the faculty in connection with the possible departures of employees to another organisational unit of UP.

Senators were also acquainted with the results of the “Bird Mortality” study, which focused on the death of birds due to their colliding with the reflective surfaces of the faculty building.
