The methioninase with suitable properties for treatment of cancer

Cancer cells rely heavily on the amino acid methionine — and when it is removed, they begin to die. We therefore investigated methionine γ-lyase from an extremophilic bacterium that thrives in hot, alkaline environments and is capable of efficiently degrading methionine. This enzyme remains remarkably stable in human plasma and can sustainably lower methionine levels, leading to a pronounced suppression of cancer cell growth in vitro. Owing to its exceptional stability and potency, TcMGL appears to be a promising candidate for a new anticancer strategy based on “starving” tumors of methionine.
