Introductory word

Ivo Frébort, the Dean of the Faculty of Science awarded ten authors of prestigious scientific publications and two excellent teachers with the Dean´s Award on Wednesday afternoon. Building on last year´s success, scientists from RCPTM received the majority of the awards again.

"I am delighted to see that we are capable of generating excellent publications at the Faculty.  Even though strict rules apply simply to qualify for the competition, we received more papers than we could actually reward. We tried to take into account individual disciplines and to maintain the ratio of surveys to full text articles containing original data," said Zdeněk Dvořák, the Vice-Dean for Science and Research. A total of 50 works were submitted to the competition.

The competition was open to authors of publications published in journals with impact factor, whose value is in top ten percent of magazines from the respective category according to the Web of Science database. However, the impact factor of the rewarded publications was in top five or even top two percent in the given category. The Dean´s award may be granted to Faculty employees only with at least 0,5 working time, who are the first or primary (corresponding) authors of the publication and have stated our Faculty as their main workplace in affiliations.

"First of all I would like to thank the Dean and all members of the evaluating team. I perceive this as a sign that we most likely do a good job," said Štěpán Kment of the RCPTM, whose awarded work has been published in the Chemical Society Reviews. The publication is focused on photoelectrochemical water splitting and above all on use of titanium dioxide and iron oxide, two basic materials, which are considered the most perspective in the field. "The research has been conducted in cooperation with Patrik Schmuki, who is one of the most significant scientists in this field. Although the article was published recently, it has become the second most cited article in the issue," said Kment. A list of all the award winning authors is available here.

As in previous years, the Dean also awarded two excellent teachers, Jaroslav Burian from Department of Geoinformatics and Ivan Chajda from department of Algebra and Geometry.

"I see this reward as an appreciation of my lifelong work at the Faculty, it is very important for me. I did not expect it at all, it was such a pleasant surprise. I am very happy," said Chajda.
