With the end of the year 2023 slowly approaching, allow me to thank you for your efforts, work and contribution to the Faculty of Science. We will continue to strive to create an atmosphere that will foster not only academic growth, but also personal and professional development.

We wish you Christmas holidays full of joy, peace and contentment. We hope that during this peaceful season you will take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and recharge your batteries for the coming year.

FS UP Scholarly Board meeting dates

The meeting dates of the FS UP Scholarly Board in the first half of 2024 are 21 January 2024 and 15 May 2024.

TA ČR  SIGMA programme: 5th public call announcement - sub-goal 5

Technology agency of the Czech Republic announced the fifth public call in the Programme for the Support of Applied Research and Innovation SIGMA – sub-goal 5, Cross-cutting support in the measures Long-term research plans and Addressing current R&D&I needs.

Forms for partial (financial), interim (professional) and final (professional) reports have been made available in the GRIS grant submission and management application.

Interim and final reports for 2023

Important dates:

Deadline for submission of partial reports: 16. January 2024; faculty deadline: 10. January 2024

Deadline for submission of final reports: 31. January 2024; faculty deadline: 25. January 2024

Deadline for submission of partial financial, interim professional and final reports for the EXPRO and JUNIOR STAR projects: 31. January 2024; faculty deadline: 25. January 2024

To meet the conditions set by the provider, please adhere to the set deadlines.

Before submitting the reports, it is necessary to deliver to the DPS (Mgr. Ľubica Korcanová) the partial/final report and the Project Monitoring Report Signature Form signed by the project investigator and the head of department.

The GACR has published a new video tutorial to help you fill in the sub-reports correctly.

International and non-university affairs

SPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Overseas Researchers - Japan

The Czech Academy of Sciences announces a call for applications for the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Overseas Researchers, which is annually announced by the Czech Academy of Sciences as the national nominating institution announces in cooperation with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

It is possible to apply for a 12-24 month stay in Japan, starting no later than 30 November 2024. The deadline for applications is 14 April 2024. All documentation is available for download on the website of the CAS in the News section of International Relations and includes summary instructions for applicants, application form and instructions for completing it.

Student Affairs Office - International Office

The International Office will be closed from 21 December 2023 to 7 January 2024. Standard office hours will apply from 8 January.

Registration for courses – summer semester 2023/2024

The registration for courses in the summer semester of the academic year 2023/2024 for all study programmes at the Faculty of Science takes place from 23 January to 19 February 2024. Detailed schedule is available, as usual, on the website.

Study plans

The lists of courses (study plans) for the academic year 2023/2024 can be found on the respective website (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral).

Online confirmation of study

You can print your confirmation of study online directly from your Portal.

State doctoral examination and dissertation defense

The application for your dissertation defense or the state doctoral examination has to be submitted at least 3 months in advance. Follow the requirements and deadlines listed on the website in the section for Doctoral Study.

Foreign prospective students

The English faculty website for prospective student has been updated. If you have a prospective PhD student in English who has already agreed on a topic with the department, you can refer him/her to this website for further information on the application process.

Academic Senate

The regular meeting of the Academic Senate FS UP will take place on Wednesday, 7 February 2024 at 13:00 in the meeting room of the Dean's Office. Detailed information and materials are available on the senate website (in Czech).

Disciplinary Committee

Doc. Lucie Brulíková was elected Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee for the period 25 October 2023 – 25 October 2025.

Organization and Maintenance

Social fund

We would like to inform the heads of workplaces and the main project investigators that from 1 January 2024, there will be a change in the volume of creation of the Social fund. Until now, it was 2%, now it will be 1% of the annual volume of costs accounted for wages.

Secretariat of the Dean and faculty's Secretary

The Secretariat of the Dean and the facutly's Secretary accepts documents for signature until 19 December 2023.

File service – end of the year operation

On 21 December 2023 the file service at Envelopa will be open from 9:00 to 10:00, and in Holice from 10:30 to 11:30. Regular and registered mail will be last picked up from the mailboxes at Envelopa at 11:45 and at Holice at 11:15. Mail delivered after this deadline will not be sent until 2 January 2024.

Faculty operation before the end of the year

The main building (Envelopa) and the buildings in the Holice campus will be closed from 22 December 2023 to 1 January 2024. The buildings will be guarded by an external security service. Report any accidents and defects to the service staff, who will then pass them on to the building management emergency service.

The VLD building (17. listopadu 50) and the SLO building (17. listopadu 50a) will be closed from 22 December 2023 to 1 January 2024. During this period, entry will only be allowed on employee cards.

Canteens, bistros, UP Press

University canteen and FreshUP bistros will have shortened opening hours during December. So will the Palacký University Press – follow their website for more information.

Electricity supply interruption – change of date

Due to the reconnection of the low-voltage switchboard, the power supply in the main building of the UP Faculty of Science (17. listopadu 12) will be interrupted on 2 February 2024 (originally scheduled for 19 January 2024) from 8:00 to 12:00. It will not be possible to use the backup power supply, as maintenance work will be carried out on this equipment. During this operational shutdown, the faculty building will be closed.

Punch with the Rector

The traditional meeting of the university management headed by the rector Martin Procházka with the university employees will take place on 19 December 2023 from 13:00 to 18:00 in the courtyard of the Armoury. In addition, during the workshops, you will be able to create an original notebook with the UP Press or a keychain on a 3D printer by geoinformaticians from the Faculty of Science. The UPoint university store will present and offer a new range of products and Christmas packages. Animators from the Fort Science will demonstrate unusual experiments and selected exhibits and puzzles.

General practitioner on campus

The GP surgery at the J. L. Fischer dormitory is extending its opening hours. It will be open every weekday (Mo – Fri) from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with Thursday hours only from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Details in the article.

Karlov recreation centre

Currently available accommodation capacity and detailed information about the recreational facility in Karlov can be found at, where you can also make a direct reservation. Check the new price list.
